Bowes

The dam line of Bowes is suspect. In 1891 the General Stud Book records Bowes as a half-sister to Surley (1708) and Whitefoot (1709) [GSB 1:5]. However, Cuthbert Routh's stud book says that Mr Hutton's Surley "was gott by his Gray Barb, his dam by ye Royall Colt, her dam by Byerley Turk, her dam by Bustler, her dam by a Barb, and her dam by Bay Dodsworth" [Early Records:30]. Since Mr Hutton is said by the General Stud Book to have bred all three siblings it may be reasonable to move the entire line of Bowes to Family 8, although Routh's stud book only mentions Surley. However, Mr Heber does not mention Bowes whilst recording that Surley was a brother to the Rutland Whitefoot and to the dam of Lord Portmore's Grey Childers [Heber 1752:191].

Little Bowes

In 1827 the General Stud Book records the pedigree of Little Bowes as "got by a brother to Mixbury, her dam, Bowes, by Hutton's Barb - Byerly Turk - Selaby Turk - Mr Place's mare, by Hautboy - Sister to Morgan's Dun, by a son of the Helmsley Turk - Dodsworth - Burton Barb" [GSB 1/3:28]. It should be noted that Mr Place died in 1676 and was unlikely to own a Hautboy Mare who must have been foaled later than 1690, and that no mention is made of Surley and Whitefoot. The Turf Register records the pedigree of Little Bowes as "by Lord Chedworth's Mixbury; grandam by Mr Hutton's Grey Barb, brought over by Mr Marshall; great grandam by the Byerley Turk, out of a full sister to the Coffin Mare" [Pick 1:223].

Mixbury

In 1791 the pedigree of Mixbury (grandaughter of Bowes) is given as "got by Regulus - Brother to Mixbury - Hutton's Barb, brought over by Mr Marshall - Byerly Turk - Selaby Turk - Mr Place's Mare, which he had out of Oliver Cromwell's Stud" [Intro:90]. This is unlikely as such a mare would have been foaled before 1658.

Coppin Mare

The General Stud Book notes that "the Coppin Mare is confused in Pick, and in old pedigrees, with The Coffin Mare (a mare so called by being concealed by Mr Place in a cellar in Fenchurch Street, at the time of the Restoration, which was probably her grandam). Pick also [1:223] makes the grandam of Little Bowes as out of an own sister to The Coffin Mare" [GSB 1:7]. This suggests that Little Bowes should belong to Family 28.

The following is based on original research done by Highflyer.

An Introduction to General Stud-Book says that the Selaby Turk Mare was out of Mr Place's Mare from Cromwell's stud, while a later version of the General Stud Book says that the Selaby Turk Mare was out of Mr Place's Mare out of a sister to Morgan's Dun out of a Dodsworth Mare out of a Burton Barb Mare. Since Mr Place's Hautboy Mare was a figment, she should also be dropped from the later version. Little Bowes pedigree would then read:

Little Bowes by Chedworth's Brother to Mixbury
Bowes by Hutton's Grey Barb [dam]
          Mare by Byerley Turk [grandam]
Mare by Selaby Turk [g grandam]
Sister to Morgan's Dun by Helmsley Turk Colt [gg grandam]
                         Mare by Dodsworth [ggg grandam]
Mare by Burton Barb [gggg grandam]

In 1891 the General Stud Book says that the Coppin Mare, by the Selaby Turk was out of a mare by Place's White Turk and the Turf Register says that the grandam of Little Bowes was out of a sister to the Coffin (Coppin) Mare:

Little Bowes by Chedworth's Brother to Mixbury
Bowes by Hutton's Grey Barb [dam]
          Mare by Byerley Turk [grandam]
Sister to Coppin Mare by Selaby Turk [g grandam]
Sister to Morgan's Dun by Helmsley Turk Colt [gg grandam]
                         Mare by Dodsworth [ggg grandam]
Mare by Burton Barb [gggg grandam]

However, the Coppin Mare was out of a mare by Place's White Turk:

Little Bowes by Chedworth's Brother to Mixbury
Bowes by Hutton's Grey Barb [dam]
          Mare by Byerley Turk [grandam]
Sister to Coppin Mare by Selaby Turk [g grandam]
Sister to Morgan's Dun by Place's White Turk [gg grandam]
                         Mare by Dodsworth [ggg grandam]
Mare by Burton Barb [gggg grandam]

This suggests that not only can Little Bowes be identified with Family 28, but also that Family 28 can be identified with Family 2.

Note that the Helmsley Turk Colt is replaced by Place's White Turk. This suggests that the Helmsley Turk Colt was the same horse as Place's White Turk, and was sired by the Helmsley Turk.

Spread Eagle

Spread Eagle (b c 1792 Volunteer) won the Derby in 1795 and his half brother Didelot (b c 1793 Trumpator) won the Derby in 1796. Eagle (b c 1796 Volunteer) won the Craven Stakes in 1801 and 1803. Both Spread Eagle and Eagle were exported to Virginia. Didelot was sent to Russia.

Their pedigree was changed in 1891: Didelot, by Trumpator - Highflyer - Engineer - Regulus - Sister to Lass of the Mill, by Traveller. "This mare's [Highflyer Mare] pedigree was wrongly given in the earlier editions as grandam by Cade - Lass of the Mill" [GSB 1/5:291].

A certificate accompanied Spread Eagle to Virginia (square brackets inserted by Fairfax Harrison): Spread Eagle was bred by Sir Frank Standish [and] was got by Volunteer, one of the best sons of Old Eclipse : his dam by [Tattersall's] Highflyer : Engineer : dam of Bay Malton and Treasurer by Cade : [Clark's Old] Lass of the Mill by Old Traveller : [Miss Makeless by] Y. Greyhound : Partner : [Brown] Woodcock : [Lusty Thornton by] Crofts Bay Barb : Makeless : Brimmer : Son of Dodsworth : out of the Burton Barb-mare. The certificate was attested to by his importer, Samuel Love, Fairfax County, on February 1, 1799. He was said to have been purchased for Colonel Hoomes by James Weatherby [E2:345].

Both Didelot and Eagle were advertised at stud claiming Sister to Leonidas (f 1756 Cade), dam of Bay Malton (b c 1760 Sampson) as their third dam.

The General Stud Book of 1891 gave no explanation for the adjustment made to these pedigrees.
