| The General Stud Book notes that "the Coppin Mare is
confused in Pick, and in old pedigrees, with The Coffin Mare (a mare so
called by being concealed by Mr Place in a cellar in Fenchurch Street,
at the time of the Restoration, which was probably her grandam). Pick
also, vol i , p 223, makes the grandam of Little Bowes as out of an
own sister to The Coffin Mare" [GSB1:7]. This suggests that
Little Bowes should belong to Family 28. The following is based on original
research done by Highflyer.
An Introduction to General
Stud-Book says that the Selaby Turk Mare was out of Mr Place's Mare
from Cromwell's stud, while a later version of the General Stud Book
says that the Selaby Turk Mare was out of Mr Place's Mare out of a
sister to Morgan's Dun out of a Dodsworth Mare out of a Burton Barb
Mare. Since Mr Place's Hautboy Mare was a figment, she should be
dropped from the later version also Little Bowes pedigree would then
read:
Little Bowes by Chedworth's
Brother to Mixbury
Bowes by Hutton's Grey Barb [dam]
Mare by Byerley Turk [grandam]
Mare by Selaby Turk [g grandam]
Sister to Morgan's Dun by
Helmsley Turk Colt [gg grandam]
Mare by Dodsworth
[ggg grandam]
Mare
by Burton Barb [gggg grandam]
In 1891 the General Stud Book
says that the Coppin Mare, by the Selaby Turk was out of a mare by
Place's White Turk and the Turf Register says that the grandam of
Little Bowes was out of a sister to the Coffin (Coppin) Mare:
Little Bowes by Chedworth's
Brother to Mixbury
Bowes by Hutton's Grey Barb [dam]
Mare by Byerley Turk [grandam]
Sister to Coppin Mare by Selaby Turk [g
grandam]
Sister to Morgan's Dun by
Helmsley Turk Colt [gg grandam]
Mare by Dodsworth
[ggg grandam]
Mare
by Burton Barb [gggg grandam]
However, the Coppin Mare was out
of a mare by Place's White Turk:
Little Bowes by Chedworth's
Brother to Mixbury
Bowes by Hutton's Grey Barb [dam]
Mare by Byerley Turk [grandam]
Sister to Coppin Mare by Selaby Turk [g
grandam]
Sister to Morgan's Dun by
Place's White Turk [gg grandam]
Mare by Dodsworth
[ggg grandam]
Mare
by Burton Barb [gggg grandam]
This suggests that not only can
Little Bowes be identified with Family 28, but also that Family
28 can be identified with Family 2.
Note that the Helmsley Turk Colt
is replaced by Place's White Turk. This suggests that the Helmsley Turk
Colt was the same horse as Place's White Turk, and was sired by the
Helmsley Turk. |
