Dodsworth's Dam |
| Prior notes that "Barb mares that were actually imported, and
are the earliest known of their respective families, are the dam of
Dodsworth, who was foaled about 1670, Lord Arlington's mare, given by
him to Mr Wilkinson of Boroughbridge, and Queen Anne's well-known
Moonah Barb mare, who was got 'by a Barb in that country,' and 'brought
over in the same mannr as The Royal African' (i e , in utero) to
Hampton Court, as attested by Mr Marshall, the King's (William III )
stud-master" [Royal Stud:76]. |
| . |
| Nimble |
| Most of Family 32
descends from Nimble. |
| . |
| Old Child Mare |
|
The General Stud Book gives the pedigree of the Old Child Mare as:
"Bred by Mr Child, or Mr Burdett, got by Sir T Gresley's Bay
Arabian called Bay Roan, out of Vixen, by The Helmsley Turk, out
of The Royal Mare, which was Dodsworth's dam" [GSB1:6].
The Turf Register notes that
"The OLD CHILD MARE (grandam of Whimsey) was also bred by Mr
Burdet, and got by Sir Thomas Gresley's Arabian, called Bay Roan; out of
Sir Walter Burdet's (afterwards Mr Burdet's) Vixen, which was purchased
of Mr Coke" [Pick1:72].
Both sources agree that Sir Thomas Gresley's bay Arabian was called Bay
Roan. |

|
Silvertail |
|
The mare line of Silvertail is corrected from
the Turf Register:
"SILVERTAIL was got by Whitenose; her dam by Rattle, out of an own
sister to Lord Viscount Tracey's Whimsey, and Mr Burdett's Kitty
Burdet - Silvertail's dam was also the dam of Lord Cullen's Jigg, son of
Old Jigg, (sire of Partner)" [Pick1:72]. "SILVERTAIL
(bay), Bred by Mr Warren, in 1737, got by Mr Heneage's Whitenose (son
of Hall Arabian) - Rattle (son of Sir J Harpur's Barb) - Darley's
Arabian - the Old Child Mare, by Sir T Gresley's Bay Arabian (Bay Roan)
- Mr Cook's Vixen, by the Helmsley Turk - Dodsworth's dam". The
General Stud Book omits the cross of the Young Child Mare
[GSB1:183]. The Young Child Mare
cross is also recorded on the bottom of the portrait of Warren's
Careless: "Careless a Horse remarkable for his great size and
strength as well as his Performances on the Turf, was bred by the late
John Borlaw Warren Esq at Stapleford near Nottingham, he was got by
Regulus (a Son of the late Lord Godolphin's Arabian) and out of his
Famous Silver-Tail Mare, she was got by Mr Heneage's Whitenose, he was
got by Mr Hall's Arabian out of a Jigg Mare. Her dam was got by Rattle
Son of Sr J Harpur's Barb (Rattle's Dam was a Royal Mare) her Grand
Dam by Darcey's Arabian out of the Dam of Lord Tracey's Whimsey her
Great Grand Dam by Sr Tho Goosley's Bay Mare out of a Mare of Mr
Cookes call'd Vixen which was out of the Dam of Dodsworth and got by the
Helmesley Turk. Careless after the Death of the late Mr Warren was
Purchas'd by his Grace the Duke of Kingston for a large Sum of Money,
and is now Esteem'd one of the most Capital Stallions in this
Kingdom" [Portraits of Celebrated Racehorses1:facing p 77].
See also the evidence for the Young Child Cross under Whitefoot Mare,
below The
General Stud Book
attributes four foals, all in the name of Mr Burdett, to the Young Child
Mare:
The Stanhope Mare (f 1711 Darley Arabian)
Whimsey [later Lord Tracy's] (f Darley Arabian)
Kitty Burdett (f Darley Arabian)
Rattle Filly (f Rattle)
The Rattle filly, who became the dam of Silvertail, was not a daughter
of the Young Child Mare, but a grandaughter, her dam being the Darley
Arabian Mare who was sister to the Stanhope Mare, Whimsey and Kitty
Burdett [GSB1:6]. |
| . |
| Vixen |
|
"VIXEN (the great
grandam of Whimsey) was got by the Earl of Holderness's Turk, out of the
dam of Dodsworth" [Pick1:72].
"Vixen, by The Helmsley Turk, out of The Royal Mare, which was
Dodsworth's dam" [GSB1:6]. Since
King Charles II died in 1685, Pick's description of Dodsworth supplies an
approximate year of birth for Vixen and her dam: "DODSWORTH (though
foaled in England) was a natural Barb - His dam, (a Barb Mare) was
brought over in the time of King Charles the Second, and was styled a
Royal Mare - She was sold by the Stud-Master, about or soon after the
said King's death, for 40gs, at 20 years old, when in foal of Vixen -
Dodsworth was a stallion, and covered several well-bred Mares, as will
appear in the various pedigrees" [Pick1:72]. |
| . |
| Whimsey |
| "WHIMSEY (own sister to the grandam of Silvertail) was bred by
Robert Burdet, Esq, who made a present of her, when a yearling, to Lord
Tracey - She was got by Mr Darley's Arabian (sire of Childers); out of
the Young Child Mare" [Pick1:72]. |

|
Whitefoot Mare*
[Gower's] |
|
The pedigree supplied
a certificate given by her importer John Gower, of Richmond County,
Virginia, which supports the Young Child cross in Silvertail's pedigree:
"Gower's imported mare got by Whitefoot : Bald Galloway : Old Smales :
Darley's Arabian : Mr Burdet's Young Child Mare, by the Harpur Barb :
Old Child Mare by Sir Thomas Gresley's Bay Arabian : her dam by the
Helmsley Turk : her dam was also the dam of Old Dodsworth " [E1:47]. Harrison also notes
that "Considering her early date, the Whitefoot mare was probably
sent to America for use as a hunter and not for the turf; but the fact
remains that on the evidence here argued she is entitled to historical
priority as the first 'bred' mare identified in America" [E1:46].
She is the 13th dam of Judge Leonard (b c 1865). |

| Young
Child Mare |
| Pick's description of the "YOUNG CHILD MARE (dam of Whimsey)
was bred by the said Mr Burdet, and got by his Arabian, out of the Old
Child Mare," introduces Burdett's Arabian, who may have been the
same horse as Harpur's
Barb [Pick1:72]. |
