Family 26

The most recent common ancestress of this family appears to be Lady Bolingbroke, with surviving lines of descent through two of her daughters, a mare by Goldfinder and Parsley.

Lady Bolingbroke
This mare was first entered as a broodmare in An Introduction to a General Stud-book (1791). Her year of foaling was not given until the 1891 edition (as 1756); this was corrected in a supplemental page, not present in all copies of this edition to 1766 (Additional Errata and Addenda. Her entry from the 1891 edition

LADY BOLINGBROKE,
Bred by Lord BOLINGBROKE, in 1756 1766, got by Squirrel, out of Cypron, the dam of King Herod, by Blaze.
1777 b f Tetotum, by Matchem … Mr Douglas

1787 b c Alderman, by ditto (sent to Virginia) … Mr Barton
1788 br f by Fortitude … Mr Stirling
    Missed to Sweetbriar in 1783.

Lady Bolingbroke's dam was listed for sale on 23 December 1765 as part of the Stud of the late Duke of Cumberland (William Augustus, 1721-1765, son of King George II). She was described as covered "this season" by Blank, but "supposed not in Foal." It, therefore, seems likely that Lady Bolingbroke was not foaled in 1766, but perhaps in 1767.

Cypron (dam of Lady Bolingbroke)
Famous as the dam of King Herod, she was first entered as a broodmare in An Introduction to a General Stud-book of 1791. In that first appearance, she was credited with two undated foals for Lord Bolingbroke between 1765 and 1769: Lady Bolingbroke and a filly by Blank (dam of Chequino, Lord Clermont's 1772 b c by Herod). In the 1800 supplement, her list of produce was modified, giving dates for Lady Bolingbroke (1766) and Chequino's dam (1767), as well as adding a 1768 b c by Snap. In the 1803 edition, the dam of Chequino was removed from Cypron's list of produce, and assigned to Cypron's unnamed daughter by Regulus (sister to Sejanus). Although unnamed in GSB, she is called the "St Quinton Mare" in the Duke's records of mares in 1762, and is called "Miss St Quintin's Mare" in advertisements for her grandson Boston (Worcester Journal. 18 Mar 1779. Numb. 4421. etc)

Cypron's entry has remained unchanged in subsequent editions; the 1891 entry reads

CYPRON,
Bred by Sir W ST QUINTIN, in 1750, got by Blaze, her dam, Salome or Selima, by Bethell's Arabian - Graham's Champion - Darley's Arabian - Merlin.

Cypron was advertised for sale twice. The advertisement in Pond's calendar for 1756 (published late that same year or early the next) read in part

To be SOLD, The Entire Stud of Sir William St Quintin, Bart.
1. A BAY MARE, six Years old, got by Blaze; her Dam by Bethell's Arabian, her Grandam by Graeme's Champion, her Great Grandam by Darley's Arabian, her Great Great Grandam by Old Merlin. She has a Colt Foal at her Foot, got by Old Cade, and supposed to be with Foal by Regulus. Champion was bred by Sir Matthew Pierson, and got by the late Sir William St Quintin's Harpham Arabian; the Sire of many noted Horses in his Time.
7. A brown Colt, out of the Blaze Mare, rising two Years old, got by Cade. The Dam of No 1, 2, and 3, (now in the Possession of the Marquis of Rockingham) was second for the mares Plate at Hambleton in the Year 1738, and in 1739 won the ninety Guineas at Lincoln. For further Particulars enquire at Scampston, near Malton, where the Stud may be seen.

She was sold again in 1765 at the sale of the late Duke of Cumberland's stud

Salome, by Bethell's Arabian (dam of Cypron)
This mare was first entered as a broodmare in the edition of 1793 as SELIMA; she was also shown with this name in the edition of 1803. In 1808, she appeared as SALOME. Beginning with the 3rd edition of 1827, her name appeared as SALOME (or Selima). Her entry in the 5th edition of 1891 reads

SALOME (OR SELIMA),

Mare by Graeme's Champion (dam of Selima)
This mare does not have a broodmare entry in GSB, and there is also no historical information about her. In the Pond 1756 advertisement for the sale of "The Entire Stud of Sir William St Quintin, Bart." her sire was described as

bred by Sir Matthew Pierson, and got by the late Sir William St Quintin's Harpham Arabian; the Sire of many noted Horses in his Time.

In 1756, the 4th Baronet (c1699-1770) was very much alive, so “the late Sir William” must have been his uncle, the 3rd Bt. (c1662-1723), purchaser of the manor of Scampston. Family history suggests that the horse known as the Harpham Arabian may have belonged to the 3rd Bt.’s grandfather; it was the long-lived 2nd Bt., Sir Henry St Quintin (c1605-1695), who had moved the family to Scampston from its ancient seat at Harpham.

The Peirson family also had roots in Harpham prior to its acquisition of the neighboring manor of Lowthorpe, seat of Sir Matthew Peirson (c1651-1711/12). Sir Matthew’s daughter Elizabeth married (license 1706) Walter Strickland of Beverley, brother to Sir William Strickland (1665-1724), 3rd Bt. of Boynton. The father of Walter and Sir William Strickland had a half-sister, Elizabeth Strickland, who married William St Quintin, son of the 2nd Bt. and father of the 3rd Bt. In 1720 Sir Matthew Peirson’s heirs sold Lowthorpe to Sir William St Quintin, 3rd Bt.

As an aside, C.M. Prior devoted several pages (147-149) in Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse to Merlin, asserting that he was bred by Sir Matthew Peirson and later entered the stud of Sir William Strickland. These “knights”, according to Prior, were two of the three who accompanied Merlin to Newmarket for his successful match against a horse of Tregonwell Frampton’s. The identity of the third person is said to be unknown, but given the human connections of the horses in this family, a guess would be Sir William St Quintin.

Champion’s dam is given as the (Old) Hautboy Mare of Family 53, who also produced several foals by the Darley Arabian. Champion himself won Her Majesty’s Gold Cup [Royal Plate] at York in 1713, running in the name of Mr “Grime”, a surname rendered as “Graham” in GSB but more properly Graeme (sometimes spelled Greame). John Graeme of Sewerby, near Bridlington, appears as a man of modest beginnings who acquired substantial wealth. His precise connection to other owners in the East Riding of Yorkshire has not been discovered, but it is notable that the Graeme family archives contain an uncommon number of documents pertaining to the Darley family.

Mare by the Darley Arabian (grandam of Selima)
This mare does not have a broodmare entry in GSB, and is lacking in any historical information.

The Darley Arabian is found in other pedigrees associated with Sir Matthew Peirson (Luggs) and some of the Beverley breeders (Family 31, Mr Witty's Sultan).

Mare by (old) Merlin (g grandam of Selima)
This mare does not have a broodmare entry in GSB, and is presently known only as a cross in pedigrees of this family. However, a mare or mares by Merlin were dam(s) of Skipjack, and Bawtry's Blind Horse, by the Darley Arabian.
