Sister to Merlin's Dam

Sister to Merlin is generally recognised as the taproot mare of Family 37, however, Sister to Merlin's Dam is probably the correct mare. There are two versions of the pedigree of Bay Bolton in the fifth edition of Volume 1 of the General Stud Book:

.	"LUGG'S MARE, Bred by Sir M Pierson, in , got by the Darley Arabian, her dam (the dam of Bay Bolton) by Makeless - Brimmer - Diamond - sister to Old Merlin" [GSB1:120].
.	"PARTNER MARE, Bred by Mr Osbaldeston, her dam by Gallant's Smiling Tom - Traveller's dam, by Almanzor - Bay Bolton's sister, by Grey Hautboy - Makeless - Brimmer - Diamond - sister to the dam of Old Merlin" [GSB1:153].

Both An Introduction to a General Stud-book and the Turf Register agree:

. "BAY BOLTON, Sir M Pierson, 1705, Grey Hautboy - Makeless - Brimmer - Diamond - Sister to the dam of Old Merlin" [Intro:166].

. BAY BOLTON "was got by Grey Hautboy, (bred by Sir William Strickland); his dam was a black mare of Sir Matthew Peirson's, got by Makeless; grandam by Brimmer, a daughter of Diamond, out of a full sister to the dam of Old Merlin" [Pick1:4].

The error, which became the accepted version, was introduced in Volume 1, Edition 5 of the General Stud Book with the inclusion of Lugg's Mare as one of the "Mares not printed in earlier editions".
