A slender branch of family 45 survives today in Russia, descendants of Bizon (1917) by Brandy.  Her tail female pedigree traces 12 generations back to Maid of Ely, by Tandem. Unfortunately Maid of Ely’s pedigree is unclear, different sources giving different information. No breeders records or references to breeders certificates have been identified. It would, therefore, be of great interest to obtain samples for mtDNA testing of one or more of the surviving representatives of this maternal line.

Maid of Ely (1785-1812) by Tandem

Maid of Ely was first entered as a broodmare in the 1803 edition of GSB (with her produce through 1801) as bred by Mr LEGH, got by Tandem, out of Harlot’s dam, by Herod. In the 1808 edition, an additional generation was added to her pedigree, grandam got by Young Cade, and has been repeated in subsequent editions. Her list of produce was also added to in later editions and by the 4th edition of volume 2 in 1892, included 14 foals 1791-1811. Also in 1892, a note was added identifying Harlot, as “first  called Conni-lass, also Mr Legh’s, was by Highflyer, and foaled in 1783.

When she raced, Maid of Ely was identified only as got by Tandem. Her produce also raced with short pedigrees, although some that were advertised, later appeared with longer pedigrees, and in Pick’s calendars, in particular, Maid of Ely’s grandam was given as a mare by Snap.

It is supposed that her pedigree as given in GSB (grandam by Young Cade) is based on an ad in Weatherby’s calendar for 1789
The Following Well-bred Mares, Colts & Fillies,
The Property of Mr Croke,
Are for Sale by Private Contract,
Enquire of
Messrs Tattersall, London; or Mr Croke, Bristol.
Lot
13 A Bay Filly, 2 yrs old, got by Highflyer, her dam by Herod, grand dam by Young Cade.—
N B Harlot is got by Highflyer, dam by Herod.—This filly is very large and boney, and untried.
The editor seems to have assumed that the Highflyer filly of the ad was a full sister to Harlot, although the ad does not say so, and may have been simply pointing to the similarity in pedigrees.

In 1797, Maid of Ely and Harlot were listed for sale as part of the dispersal of the horses “late the Property of Colonel Legh.” They both had produce also listed for sale, and both were listed without pedigrees.

In 1802 Old England (1793) [formerly Sir William] was advertised as got by Sir Peter Teazle - Maid of Ely, by Tandem - Herod. By 1804, his pedigree had been extended: got by Sir Peter Teazle - Maid of Ely, by Tandem - Herod - Marske - Regulus - Hutton’s Spot - Fox Cub - Bay Bolton - Coneyskins - Hutton’s Grey Barb - Byerly Turk. In 1806, Old England (formerly Sir William) was advertised as got by Sir Peter Teazle ; his dam, the Maid of Ely, by Tandem; grand dam by Herod; great grand dam by [Young] Cade; great great grand dam by Regulus; great great great grand dam Hutton's Spot, of whom Fox Cub, Bay Bolton, Coney Skin, Hutton's Grey Barb, &c, &c.
NOTE: the Regulus mare in this pedigree has the same pedigree as [Hutton’s] Portia, and the Hutton’s Spot mare, the same as Priscilla’s dam.

In 1805 Fieldfare (late Bloodstick) was advertised as got by Alexander - Maid of Ely, by Tandem, out of Harlot’s dam, by Rib - Wynn Arabian - Alcock Arabian - Grasshopper sister to Gentleman’s dam. This is similar to an American pedigree recorded in the Hampton Stud Book (see Fairfax Harrison, Early American Turf Stock, Vol. One Mares, 1934; p 277): "...Harlot, imported by Col. Tallmadge was got by a full bred son of Herod [which Harrison identified as Phenomenon, based on another pedigree] out of a Snap mare: she was out of Ld Bertie's Harlot." Ld A Bertie’s Harlot (1754) is listed in GSB as produce of his Rib mare (dam of Countess, 1760, by Blank); her pedigree was given in the 1793 edition as dam by the Wynn Arabian - Governor - Alcock Arabian - Grasshopper - Sister to Gentleman’s dam.” By 1813, Fieldfare was advertised with a shortened pedigree as got by Alexander - Maid of Eley, by Tandem - Harlot’s dam, by King Herod.

In 1810 Maid of Ely’s grandson Phlebotomist was advertised as got by Beningbrough - dam of Ben Devaynes, &c, by Sir Peter Teazle - Maid of Ely, by Tandem - dam of Col Legh’s Harlot, by Herod. The following year his pedigree was extended one generation, “… Harlot’s dam, by Herod; Young Cade, &c &c &c.”

In 1815, Highlander (1809) was advertised as bred by Lord Montgomerie, got by John Bull - (Hebe & Fair Forester’s dam) by Sir Peter Teazle - Maid of Ely (Cheshire Round’s dam) by Tandem - (Harlot’s dam) by King Herod - Snap. Another ad in 1817 of horses for sale included a pedigree for Highlander as “bred by Lord Montgomerie; got by John Bull, his dam (Phoebe and Fair Forester’s dam,) by Sir Peter Teazle, out of the Maid of Ely, (Cheshire Round’s dam,) by Tandem, out of Harlot’s dam, by King Herod, Young Cade, &c.

In 1840, Monarch was advertised with pedigree as got by Sovereign- Maryna, by Orangeflower - Sweetheart, by Sir Peter - Maid of Ely, by Tandem - Herod - Young Cade - Partner - Byerly Turk - Makeless - Brimmer - Place’s White Turk - Dodsworth - Layton Barb

Herod mare (dam of Harlot, 1783, by Highflyer)
This mare does not have an entry in GSB, but from references in various pedigrees, is believed to have been dam of Mr Dyson’s Thoughtless “sister to Harlot” by Highflyer, an aged bay mare which won 50 l for 4 yo & up at Enfield in 1789 (Pick’s calendar); of Sir Frank Standish’s Harlot, 1783 b f by Highflyer, and Mr Legh’s Maid of Ely, 1785 f by Tandem.  Mr Tattersall stood both the stallions (Highflyer & Tandem) Harlot's dam was bred to. However, Harlot's dam is not to be found in advertisements listing his mares. In Weatherby’s 1784 Racing Calendar, an advertisement is dated 1st of January 1785, and in Weatherby’s 1785 Racing Calendar, the advertisement is dated 10 January 1786. The only Herod mare listed in both is Perdita.

Harlot’s grandam
The conclusion seems inescapable that the true pedigree of this mare was unknown, and that proprietors of her descendants had chosen different Harlot’s whose pedigrees they adopted to extend those of their own horses. She has been identified variously as
(1) a Snap mare
(2) a mare by the Wynn Arabian - Alcock Arabian - Grasshopper sister to Gentleman’s dam
(3) a mare by Young Cade, sometimes extended as [her dam by] Partner - Byerly Turk - Makeless - Brimmer - Place’s White Turk - Dodworth - Layton Barb
(4) a mare by Marske - Regulus - Hutton’s Spot - Fox Cub - Bay Bolton - Coneyskins - Hutton’s Grey Barb - Byerley Turk

Brown Bread

Brown Bread is entered in the General Stud Book as being sired by his half-brother. The General Stud Book notes: "his sire somewhat doubtful, but supposed the above Old England" [GSB 2/2:163].
