Family 25

The most recent common ancestress of this family is Lardella (1780). Lines to the present descend mainly from her daughter Alexina (1788) by King Fergus, but a line through her (1791) daughter by Slope continues through Furlough (1937) by Man o'War.

MtDNA haplotyping has documented the same haplotype in both branches. ("Closer analysis of a Thoroughbred mitochondrial DNA haplotype confirms its single founder origin and clarifies links with breed registry records." Rogers et al. 2013, in Press).

Lardella
Lardella was first entered as a broodmare in the 1800 Supplement to GSB. Two more foals were added to her list of produce in the editions of 1803 and 1808, as well as her death date. Her list of produce has remained unchanged since, as has her pedigree, which was extended slightly in the 1891 edition, by including the sire of her grandam (brother to Fearnought). The entry from the 1891 edition reads

LARDELLA,

    * This mare (Mr Kaye's) produced a filly by Bay Trophonius, and in 1813 a filly by L'Orient.

This Lardella was probably the unnamed No. 24 "Bay Filly by [young] Marske, Dam by Old Cade." listed for sale "late the Property of John Hutton of Marske" in 1782 or early 1783. She should not be confused with the older mare called Lardella in this same sales list.

Cade Mare (Dam of Lardella)
This mare was first entered in the edition of 1891.

❖ CADE MARE,
Bred by Mr HUTTON, her dam (Beaufremont's dam) by brother to (Bolton) Fearnaught [sic] - Miss Wyndham, by Wyndham - Belgrade Turk - Old Scarboro' Mare.
1768 ch c Ranger (Strode's), by Hutton's Chesnut Ranger … Mr Hutton
f Lardella, by Y Marske … Mr Hutton
f by ditto … Mr Hutton

There was also a new entry in that edition for a "sister" to Lardella.

YOUNG MARSKE MARE (sister to Lardella),
Bred by Mr HUTTON, her dam by Young Cade - Beaufremont's dam, by Brother to Fearnought - Miss Wyndham, by Wyndham.
1799 b f by Skelton … Mr Wilson
1800 b f by Antĉus … Mr Ferguson
ch c Litte Isaac, by Hercules … Mr Wilson

However, this mare's dam is shown as by Young Cade; this can only be supposed to be an error since all the other pedigrees of this line in GSB and in contemporary calendars say Cade.

When the Hutton Stud was advertised for sale in late 1782 or early 1783, there were no Cade mares listed, but six of the produce in the sale were out of a Cade mare or mares. Two produce were specifically said to have been out of the dam of Stroud's Ranger. The dam of No. 24 (by age, probably Lardella,) was not identified as out of the dam of Stroud's Ranger. Since the youngest Cade get were foaled in 1757, it seems likely that by the late 1770's - early 1780's Mr Hutton had only one remaining Cade mare. If true, then her list of produce, including the sales horses, would be

CADE MARE,

Beaufremont's Dam, by Brother to Fearnought (grandam of Lardella)
This mare does not have a broodmare entry in GSB. Her son Beaufremont, however, has been included since An Introduction to a General Stud-book in 1791.

Beaufremont, (Mr Stapleton's) 1758, Tartar - brother to Fearnought - Miss Windham, by Windham - Belgrade Turk - Old Scarborough Mare, by Makeless.

Beaufremont was advertised as a stallion 1769-1774; a typical advertisement described him as

a fine Bay, 13 Years old, 15 Hands and a Half high; was got by Tartar; his Dam, by the own Brother to the Duke of Bolton's Fearnought; his Grandam was the famous Miss Windham, by Windham; his Great Grandam, by the Real Belgrade Turk, out of the Old Scarbrough Mare, who was got by Makeless; which Mare beat the Duke of Rutland's famous Bonny Black the Great Match over Newmarket, As Witness my Hand, / Tho. Stapleton
Beaufremont, at four Years old, won £50 at Scarbrough. At five Years old, £50 at York, (May Meeting) and in August, the Ladies Plate of £60. At six Years old, £50 at York, (May Meeting) and in August, the Great Subscription, beating Yorkshire Jenny, Engineer, Elephant, Dorrimond, and Dumplin; and also £50 at Lincoln. At eight Years old, £50 at Lancaster. At nine Years old the following Fifties, viz Carlisle, Penrith, Lancaster, and Preston, and the Great Subscription at York.
His Action , Shape, and Beauty are too well known to the Gentlemen of the Turf to need any further Mention.
He gets remarkably strong Foals, good Colours, and wellmarked. [York Courant. 11 Feb 1772. No 2417.]

Miss Wyndham, by Windham
This mare's first broodmare entry was in the 1891 edition of GSB. She had been included since the edition of 1808 in the "Second Part Pedigrees of Horses and Mares of Note, not included in the former part" as the Duke of Somerset's.

MISS WYNDHAM,
Got by Windham, her dam by the Belgrade Turk, out of the old Scarborough Mare, by Makeless - Brimmer.
1740 br c by Brother to the Bolton Fearnought ... Duke of Somerset
*     gr f by ditto ... Duke of Somerset
    * This gr mare produced, in 1758, Mr Stapleton's br c Beaufremont, by Tartar, and a f by Cade (Mr Hutton's)

Miss Wyndham, according to Pick (Turf Register, i, 1803; p 287) "won a King's Plate and several Matches at Newmarket, and allowed to be in a very high form." The date of her racing career is not known since she is not mentioned by name as an entry in any races in Cheny's calendars (1727-1750), the Newmarket Match Book (which has records of race results from Newmarket starting in October 1718) or in Jackson's records of racing at York and Hambleton (York from 1709, Hambleton from 1712). Nor is a mare of the Duke of Somerset's mentioned as winning a King's Plate in those works. Possibly she raced before the date of these surviving records.

On the other hand, her dam sire, the Belgrade Turk, is believed to have begun his stud career in England about 1722. It cannot have been much earlier than that date, in any case, to allow for the history given him by Cheny in 1745 (Earl of Portmore's Belgrade in the index) since the Siege of Belgrade was in 1717. The Belgrade Turk was

taken at the Siege of Belgrade, in Turkey, from the Bashaw of that Place, by General Merci [Count Claudius Florimund de Mercy (1666-1734)]; by whom he was sent to the Prince de Craon, who sent him to the Prince of Lorain, now Emperor, whose Minister in London sold him; and he died not long since the Property of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill Bart.

Possibly Pick was in error, or Miss Wyndham's King's Plate win was not recorded in the contemporary calendars; the winner at Edinburgh in 1737, for instance, is not known.

Belgrade Turk Mare
This mare does not have a broodmare entry in GSB, but is possibly recorded in Cheny's racing calendars.

The Belgrade Turk was advertised to the public in March 1728/9 [Newcastle Courant. 22 Mar 1728-9 Numb. 204.]

A Brown Bay Turkish Horse, of a good Size, strong, and free from all Manner of Blemish, is kept at Constable Burton near Bedale, in Yorkshire, and allowed to serve Mares at a Guinea each: He was sent from Belgrade by General Mercie, and is Sire to the Mare which won the Subscription Money last Year at Richmond, being the first that was trained of his Breed.

The mare mentioned in the above advertisement was Sir Marmaduke Wyvill's bay mare; she won the 120 guineas for 5 years old at Richmond, 18 Jun 1728, beating four others. She appears to have been the mare raced the next year by the Duke of Somerset as Belgrade, starting for the King's Plate for 5 year old mares at Newmarket in April 1729. In his annual for 1745, Cheny gave a pedigree for the Duke of Somerset's 5 year old brown horse, which supports this identification

The Brown Horse was bred by his Grace, out of Miss Windham, and a Son of Bay Bolton.
Miss Windham was out of his Grace's Wyvill Mare, and Windham, bred, &c as p 109, 111.

Old Scarborough Mare (grandam of Miss Wyndham)
Although mentioned in earlier editions, the first broodmare entry for this mare was in the 1891 edition.

(OLD) SCARBORO' MARE (foaled about 1715), got by Makeless, her dam by Brimmer.
1724 bl c The Scarborough Colt, by Tifter ... Sir W Wyville
*    f by Belgrade Turk ... Sir W Wyville
†    f by Bay Bolton ... Sir W Wyville
    * Dam of Miss Wyndham by Wyndham.
† Dam of Sir M Wyville's Y Belgrade, by The Belgrade Turk.
Comus, Slane, Y Melbourne, North Lincoln, and Sefton descend from this mare.

There are no surviving records of races run by the Scarborough Mare; however there is a tradition repeated in several pedigrees that she beat Bonny Black.

…the old Scarborough Mare which beat the Duke of Rutland's famous Bonny Black [Dublin Journal. Numb. 2424. 2-5 Jun 1750.; advertisement for Chip]

Since Bonny Black raced 1708-1713, it seems that the Scarborough Mare should be dated somewhat earlier than the date of 1715, given in GSB. If she won her race against Bonny Black in 1713, the last year that mare raced, the Scarborough Mare would probably have been foaled no later than 1707 or 1708; if the same age as Bonny Black, she would have been foaled in 1705.

Even if foaled as early as 1705, however, this mare's produce cannot have been for Sir W Wyville (as given in GSB), since Sir William Wvyill, 4th Baronet, is believed to have died about 1684. The (old) Scarborough Mare probably belonged to Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, the 5th Baronet (c1666-1722) when she raced, passing into the hands of his son Sir Marmaduke, the 6th Baronet (1692-1754) who bred the Scarborough Colt and Young Belgrade.

Brimmer Mare (dam of the Scarborough Mare)
This mare does not have a broodmare entry in GSB. She is, however, mentioned in a pedigree of Godolphin Hunter provided to Lord Rockingham. This pedigree came from a copy of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill's studbook then in the possession of James Brown, of Scarborough, and identified the Brimmer mare as belonging to Sir Marmaduke's father and called Thisbe.

The Scarborough Mar[e] was got by Mackeless her dam by Brimme[r] (which Mare was a mare of Sr Marma: Wyvills [fa]ther's & called Tisby. [WWM/R193/49, continued from WWM/R193/34a; Sheffield Archives]
