| One of the traditional
pedigrees presented for Bonny Lass* attributes her to Family 11
[AmSB2:393;B-Z]. Grey Wilkes (gr f by Old Hautboy)
Snake Mare (f by Snake)
Lath Mare (f 1742 by Lath)
Bonny Lass [Ancaster] (f 1750 by Snip)
Bonny Lass* (b f by Blank)
Young Bonny Lass (f by Jolly Roger*)
Polly Byrd (f by Aristotle*)
Virginia (ch f by Mark Anthony [Lee's])
However, the only surviving
evidence for Bonny Lass* is that "she was 'a fine English mare' imported
with Janus (and so in 1756) by Mordecai Booth (1703-1762), a
merchant at Yorktown, resident in Gloucester County, Va " [Early
American Turf Stock:130].
"BONNY LASS, Bred by the Duke
of Ancaster, in 1750, got by Snip - Lath - Easby Snake - Grey Wilkes, by
Hautboy". This Ancaster Bonny Lass produced 11 offspring from 1759
to 1774, inclusive, in the Duke of Ancaster's stud, and died in 1779.
Ancaster Bonny Lass produced three fillies by Blank: Maria (b f 1765),
Maw (b f 1766) and Manto (b f 1768), none of whom could have been
imported in 1756 with Janus [GSB1:41, 42].
It is possible that Bonny Lass*
was Sir P. Leicester's Bonny Lass (b f 1751, by Black Chance
[Williams's]), who was on the turf in England in 1755, and then
disappeared from the English records [Heber 1755:12, 27, 171 and Pick
1755:11].
