Family 8

The above table represents our own research and does not follow the General Stud Book or Bobinski-Zamoyski.

Genetic Genealogy

MtDNA haplotyping results published to date for contemporary samples from four branches of family 8 indicate one haplotype found in branches 8a, 8d, and 8h, and another slightly different haplotype, possibly representing a separate founder, in 8c. Since 8d and 8h branch from 8c, if a separate founder is present in 8c it is most plausbily due to a relatively recent error in the stud book record. The haplotype found in 8a, 8d, and 8h appears to be the same haplotype found in the majority of contemporary members of family 16 that have been tested. Both families also have roots in the Hutton stud, raising the possibility of, but not conclusively proving, a common 17th century dam.

See Equine Genetic Genealogy and The Hutton Family of Marske.

Hutton's Surley

The pedigree for Hutton's Surley, which differs from that given in the General Stud Book, is recorded in Cuthbert Routh's stud book. This pedigree adds two more crosses to the traditional mare line:
Mare by Bay Dodsworth
   Mare by Barb
Mare by Bustler (the traditional taproot)
          Mare by Byerley Turk
              Mare by Hutton's Royal Colt
Sister to Surley by Hutton's Grey Barb
The "Barb" is not identified [C M Prior, Early Records:30]. Bay Dodsworth is possibly the same horse as Dicky Pierson.

Physalis

Nine of fifteen offspring, from various non-grey sires, of the chestnut Soothsayer Mare (2nd dam of Physalis) are recorded as roan in the General Stud Book. Since her offspring also had grey offspring from non-grey sires the assumption is that the chestnut Soothsayer Mare was instead grey. No explanation was given for the spontaneous appearance of the grey colour.

Pedigrees used to create this chart (please see Lord Rockingham's pedigrees)

Pedigrees are confusing and perhaps confused; the most credible are:

Marske Augt ye 29th 1754 / The Brown Mare [Marske's dam] was got by my Blacklegs, her Dam by Mr Lister's Fox Cub, her Grandam by Coneyskins, her great Grandam by the Hutton Grey Barb, her gt gt Grandam by the Royal Colt, her gt gt gt Grandam by Byerley Turk out of a Mare got by Bustler.
A year old Fillye from the above Mare got by Cade / John Hutton [WWM R193/67, Sheffield Archives].

TRIMMER. TO cover this Season, at Foaty, near Cove, at two guineas a mare, and 5 s 5 d the groom; his performance when a racer is well known. He was got by Hutton's young Marske, dam by bay Ranger, grand dam by Phantom, great grand dam by Black Legs, which was the dam of old Marske, gt gt grand dam by Fox Cub, gt gt gt grand dam by Connyskins, gt gt gt gt grand dam by the Grey Barb, and gt gt gt gt gt grand dam by the Royal Colt, from a Beverley [sic] Turk mare. 1794 Irish Racing Calendar; Stallions, in 1795.

From the Sporting Magazine, Vol. 9. Second Series. or Vol. 84. Old Series. May, 1834. p27-31 "Death of Octavian, his Pedigree, Performances, and Winnings of his Progeny."

..... [Octavian's] sire was Stripling (a son of Phœnomenon), his dam by Oberon, his grandam by Ranthos, own Brother to Pumpkin, &c; his great great grandam by Sir Charles Turner's Sweepstakes; his great great great grandam Sister to Hutton's Old Careless*, by Spot - Fox Cub - Coneyskins - Hutton's Grey Barb - Hutton's Royal Colt - Byerley Turk - Bustler. / * The pedigree of Hutton's Old Careless has, I believe, never before appeared in print. This pedigree of him I have obtained from some MS pedigrees of the late Mr Wm Pick (of York), which are now in my possession." Alfred Highflyer. / Ebor, March 27, 1834.

..... OCTAVIAN was bred by a Mr Crosier, who resided at that time at Hummanby [sic], near Scarbrough… [he] then had a sort of partnership or connection with a Mr Allison, a blacksmith…. Allison had purchased OCTAVIAN's dam of the late well-known Mr John Peverill, of the Black Lion Hotel, Stockton, a celebrated breeder of blood horses and cocks, whose attested pedigree of the Oberon mare, in his own hand writing, I have now in my possession.

2   ALMONY (1753), Mr Curzon’s [apparently same as Atalanta, dam of Sultana, in GSB :1891], was got by Regulus; her Dam by the Duke of Bolton’s Little John, her Grandam by Mr Hutton’s Black Legs, her Great Grandam by Mr Leister’s Squirrel, her G G Grandam by Coney Skins, her G G G Grandam by the Grey Barb, her Dam’s Dam was got by a Horse called the Royal Colt, from a Daughter of the Byerley Turk [Pond 1757].

3 The DORIMOND MARE was one of the few Hutton-bred horses still in the possession of Mr [James] Hutton at the time the General Stud Book was begun. She is one of only two with a broodmare entry in the Introductory volume of 1791, and appears there without pedigree. Her pedigree was first given in the edition of 1793. In the Supplement of 1800 both her list of produce and pedigree were corrected, with a comment by the editor that "As there was a trifling error in the pedigree as well as in the produce of the Dorimond mare, the whole is here re-printed". Five more foals, all bred by Mr Hutton, the last in 1789, suggest that the source of the corrections appearing in 1800 was Mr Hutton himself. The corrected pedigree was: DORIMOND MARE, 72 [page reference to 1793 edition] Bred by Mr HUTTON, got by Dorimond (Son of Dormouse) her dam, Portia (sister to Plaything's dam) by Regulus - Hutton's Spot - Fox Cub - Bay Bolton - Coneyskins - Hutton's Grey Barb - Byerly Turk.
