Hutton's Surley

The pedigree for Hutton's Surley, which differs from that given in the General Stud Book, is recorded in Cuthbert Routh's stud book. This pedigree adds two more crosses to the traditional mare line:

The "Barb" is not identified [C. M. Prior, Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, p. 30]. Bay Dodsworth is probably the same horse as Dicky Pierson.

Physalis

Nine of fifteen offspring, from various non-grey sires, of the chestnut Soothsayer Mare (2nd dam of Physalis) are recorded as roan in the General Stud Book. Since her offspring also had grey offspring from non-grey sires the assumption is that the chestnut Soothsayer Mare was instead grey. There is no explanation for the spontaneous appearance of the grey colour.

ALMONY (1753), Mr Curzon’s [apparently same as Atalanta, dam of Sultana, in GSB, i, 1891], was got by Regulus; her Dam by the Duke of Bolton’s Little John, her Grandam by Mr Hutton’s Black Legs, her Great Grandam by Mr Leister’s Squirrel, her G G Grandam by Coney Skins, her G G G Grandam by the Grey Barb, her Dam’s Dam was got by a Horse called the Royal Colt, from a Daughter of the Byerley Turk (Pond 1757)

The DORIMOND MARE was one of the few Hutton-bred horses still in the possession of Mr [James] Hutton at the time the General Stud Book was begun. She is one of only 2 with a broodmare entry in the Introductory volume of 1791, and appears there without pedigree. Her pedigree was first given in the edition of 1793. In the Supplement of 1800 both her list of produce and pedigree were corrected, with a comment by the editor that "As there was a trifling error in the pedigree as well as in the produce of the Dorimond mare, the whole is here re-printed." 5 more foals, all bred by Mr Hutton, the last in 1789, suggest that the source of the corrections appearing in 1800 was Mr Hutton himself. The corrected pedigree was: DORIMOND MARE, 72 [page reference to 1793 edition] Bred by Mr HUTTON, got by Dorimond (Son of Dormouse) her dam, Portia (sister to Plaything's dam) by Regulus - Hutton's Spot - Fox Cub - Bay Bolton - Coneyskins - Hutton's Grey Barb - Byerly Turk

Ranger, Mr Hutton’s (1749 b c), was got by Mr Hutton’s Spot; his Dam by Mixbury, his Grandam by Mulso Turk, Sire of Mr Hutton’s Black Legs, his Great Grandam by Bay Bolton, his G G Grandam by Coney Skins, his G G G Grandam by Mr Hutton’s Barb, his G G G G Grandam by the Byerley Turk, out of a Bustler Mare (Pond 1755, when racing for Mr Hutton)

Stately (1750), Mr Hutton’s [ch m that won the King’s Plate for 5 yo Mares at Hambleton in 1755] was got by Mogul; her Dam by Hutton’s Black-legs, her Grandam by Bay Bolton, her Great Grandam by Coney Skins, her G G Grandam by Hutton’s grey Barb, her G G G Grandam by the Byerley Turk, out of a Bustler Mare (as given in Pond 1756; same information also in Pond 1755 & Heber 1756; mare was racing for Mr Hutton at the time)
