Coppin Mare

The General Stud Book notes that "The Coppin Mare is confused in Pick, and in old pedigrees, with The Coffin Mare (a mare so called by being concealed by Mr Place in a cellar in Fenchurch Street, at the time of the Resoration, which was probably her grandam). Pick also, vol 1 , p 233, makes the grandam of Little Bowes as out of an own sister to the Coffin Mare " [GSB 1:7]. The Coppin Mare could possibly connect to Family 2.

The Somerset Mare

The Somerset Mare was the dam of Virgin in 1712 and Governor probably earlier in about 1709, and her last known foal was Venus in 1721. She was probably foaled about 1700, as her dam, the Coppin Mare, was sired by the Selaby Turk who must have been imported before 1699. Although the General Stud Book does not specify which Commoner sired the Somerset Mare, and some sources suggest it was Warton's Commoner, it seems more likely by dates that her sire was Crofts's Commoner, as Warton's Commoner would not have been born as early as 1700.

Grey Ward, Ancaster Grasshopper & Ancaster Tryal

In 1731 there were three grey colts in the Ancaster stud, Grey Ward, Ancaster Grasshopper and Ancaster Tryal. These colts are not positively identified in the Ancaster stud records and they are further confused in other authorities as being the same horse. Mr Cheny appears to believe that Grasshopper and Tryal were identical, as he says "Crab, which got Ramper, was also the Sire of the Ancaster Trial or Grasshopper, Little Crab, Lord Portmore's Crab, Tom Tinker, &c" [Cheny: 1743], and Mr Pick appears to think all three were identical as he indexed the wins of all three under Grasshopper. However all three colts are mentioned in the Ancaster Trial book [ER:93] and on one occasion Grasshopper and Tryal competed in the same trial.

Grey Ward is noted in the Duke of Ancaster's stud books as by "Duke of Rutland's Crab" whilst Mr Pick notes that "Sally was got by Blank; her dam by Ward (son of Mr Panton's Crab)" [Pick 1:238]. Mr Prior assigns Grey Ward to the Ancaster mare Virgin without giving any reason for so doing [ER:87]. However, in the Antrim stud records Grey Ward appears to be more likely associated with the Ancaster mare Dainty, as there it says that "Grey Ward's dam was got by Merlin, out of old Dainty" which nearly accords with the Ancaster stud book where Dainty is said to be by Old Pert from Sweetlips Mare by Ancaster Merlin [Royal Studs:182].

The pedigree usually assigned to the Ancaster Grasshopper was probably confused with that of his son Poppet, as the General Stud Book says "Grasshopper, Duke of Ancaster's, 1731, by Crab - Ashridge Ball - Dodswoth - Barb Mare [GSB 1:380], whilst Mr Cheny says " Poppet was got by the Ancaster Grasshopper, Son of Crab, bred, &c as p 129. His Dam was got by Ashbridge Ball, which was got by Leeds, out of a Daughter of Mad-cap, Brother to Old Postboy, which was out of the Somerset Jenny come tye me, and Dyer's Dimple, which was out of a Daughter of Spanker, and the Sire of Leeds; his Grand Dam was got by Dodsworth, his Great Grand Dam was a Willobough Barb Mare" [Cheny:1745]. This pedigree is more likely to belong to Poppet than to Ancaster Grasshopper as there were no mares in the Ancaster stud with this breeding. If Grasshopper was a son of Crab, as stated in Cheny and elsewhere, then his dam may have been the Ancaster Virgin, noted above in connection with Grey Ward.

The pedigree of Ancaster Tryal is not given anywhere, except by Mr Cheny, who thought he was Grasshopper. A third mare in the Ancaster stud produced a grey colt in 1731, she being the One Eyed Mare by Merlin, from Favourite by Old Pert [ER:92]. One Eyed Mare's 1731 grey colt was sired by Smiling Tom and may have been the Ancaster Tryal.

Gentleman

Gentleman has been moved to Family 28 from Family 30 and is shown as a son of the Duke of Ancaster's Virgin.

Both the Turf Register [Pick 1:22] and the General Stud Book [GSB 1:10] state that Gentleman was from Golden Locks or Sister to Goldenlocks of Family 30. There are no other early sources that support this.

C M Prior speculated that Gentleman may have been the grey colt of 1723 produced by the mare Virgin [Early Records:95]. However, Virgin's colt was unnamed and she was not shown to have had another foal by Alcock's Arabian [Early Records:87] and Mr Prior noted that Gentleman's Sister produced a grey filly to Stumps in 1735 [Early Records:86]. His speculation was possibly prompted by the appearance of Gentleman in extracts from the Duke of Ancaster's Trial Book and his colt from the Ancaster Young Grey Mare in 1735 [ER:92].

Recent original research by A J Hibbard has discovered a pedigree for Gentleman that supports Mr Prior's speculation. Gentleman was "bred by the late Duke of Ancaster ... got by Alcock's Arabian, out of a mare call'd Virgin, which was got by Old Merlin" [Stamford Mercury:1742]. He was advertised to cover for Michael Dyson at the Wheat Sheaf at March in the Isle of Ely in Cambridgeshire for a fee of 1 guinea.
