| The pedigree for
Whistlejacket says he "was got by Mogul; his dam by Sweepstakes;
a daughter of the Hampton Court Chesnut Arabian, Makeless,
Brimmer, Mr Place's White Turk, Dodsworth, out of Mr Layton's
Violet Barb Mare, which was a broodmare in Lord Darcy's Stud"
[Pick1:154]. Note that Dodsworth was mated to a
mare in Lord Darcy's Stud "Mr Burton's Violet Barb Mare in Lord
Darcy's Stud" whose daughter by Dicky Pierson, son of Dodsworth,
was third dam of Desdemona [Pick1:242]. This places Dodsworth at
Sedbury and the Burton Barb Mare at Sedbury. This could suggest that the
taproot mares of Family 2 and Family 4 are the same mare. |
| The General Stud Book says she was bred at Hampton Court,
"her dam by Dodsworth, out of (Violet) Layton Barb Mare" [GSB1:15]. She is credited with four daughters and one son (Trumpet). Her
daughter, Brimmer Mare, is said to have been given by Queen Anne to Mr.
Croft. Brimmer Mare produced Brown Farewell and her sister [GSB1:4].
Sister to Brown Farewell produced Mr Elstob's Cripple Barb Mare, which
produced "about 1717 c Cartouch, by the Bald Galloway" [GSB1:13]. Of Darcy's Yellow Turk, the
General Stud Book says only that he
was the sire of Spanker, Brimmer, and the great great grandam of
Cartouch" [GSB1:389]. This would mean that Darcy's Yellow Turk and
Place's White Turk are both said to have sired the 4th dam
of Cartouch (Trumpet's 2nd dam). However, the
General Stud Book has
chosen Brown Farewell to be the Makeless Mare, thereby adding a Brimmer
cross. Both Pick and Heber say that the Makeless Mare was a foal of
Trumpet's Dam.
"Cartouch was got by the Bald Galloway; his dam was bred in
the Royal Stud at Hampton-Court, and got by the Cripple
Barb; grandam by Makeless; great grandam by Place's White
Turk, a daughter of Dodsworth, out of Mr Layton's Violet
Barb Mare" [Pick1:17].
"The White Turk got the great grandams of Old Scar, Wyndham,
Crutches, Old Cartouch and several others" [Pick1:71].
"The White Turk of Mr. Place's got the Great Grandams of
Grey Ramsden, Scar, Guy, Cartouch, Young Greyhound"
[Heber1744:xi].
"The Yellow Turk, which got Spanker, got Brimmer, the Great
Great Grand-Dam of Old Cartouch, and many others"
[Heber1744:ix]. The Makeless Mare is listed as a
foal of Trumpet's Dam in the General Stud Book [GSB1:15]. Thus
Makeless Mare appears to be the dam of Elstob's Cripple Barb Mare. This
now means that both Dodsworth and Darcy's Yellow Turk are cited as
having sired the 4th dam of Cartouch. Since there is evidence that
Dodsworth and Darcy's Yellow Turk are the same horse, the
conflict is resolved. For more information on Dodsworth
and Darcy's Yellow Turk, see the article by Highflyer. |
| As
shown in the General Stud Book the Duke of
Somerset's Red Rose, and his sister, were from Croft's
Pet Mare. However, according to 18th-century stallion
advertisements, they were not out of this Pet Mare.
Their dam was instead a mare called Smug, she by Slug
and out of "a Mare of Mr. Frampton's Bull-kind" [The
Newcastle Courant Saturday, April 6, 1734 No 467]. |
