Caller Ou br f 1858 (Stockwell - Haricot, by Mango or Lanercost). Sire Line Stockwell. Family 10-a.

Bred in Yorkshire by William I'Anson from his wonderful mare Haricot (br f 1847) her name apparently meant "fresh oysters". She was said to be exceptionally tough, a strongly made filly "with a ewe neck, and pulled hard, while she generally was exceedingly awkward to ride. She carried her head high; and, in fact, her neck was almost the wrong way up". During her six years on the racecourse she won forty-nine of the ninety-eight races she contested, including the Doncaster St Leger and thirty-four Queen's Plates, collecting £11,014. Possibly her finest moment was her run in the St Leger when she defeated the Derby winner Kettledrum (ch c 1858 Rataplan) "after a desperate struggle" by a head, however, when she lost the Northumberland Plate by "half a neck" to the three year old Brown Bread (br c 1862 Weatherbit) in 1865 she was conceding him 37 pounds.

In the stud she produced nine living foals, of whom eight ran. Pandore (b f 1867 Newminster) started seventeen times and won at Ascot, Newmarket and Goodwood, earning £675. The Pearl (b f 1868 Newminster) started twenty-seven times, winning at Epsom, Goodwood, Brighton, Newmarket, Lewes and York, earning £2750. Poldoody (bl f 1870 Beadsman) started thirteen times winning at Shrewsbury and Newmarket, earning £380. Periwinkle (br f 1872 Adventurer) started eleven times winning at York, Newton and Newcastle, earning £241. Pilchard (br c 1873 Adventurer) started twelve times winning at Halifax, Scarborough and Thirsk, earning £609. Roysterer (b c 1878 Cremorne) started eighteen times winning at Edinburgh and Newmarket and the City and Suburban at Epsom earning £1404. He died in South Africa in 1884. Adanapaar (br c 1880 Speculum) started thirty-eight times winning at Newmarket, Croydon, Lewes, Alexandra Park and Stockbridge, earning £1131. Calais (b c 1883 Altyre) ran nine times without success.

Her classics winning descendants include the 1909 Oaks winner Perola (ch f 1906 Persimmon) and in recent times Right Tack (b c 1966 Hard Tack), winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes in 1969 and Wonder Perfume (b f 1992 Fotitieng), the Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas) winner in 1995. Other notable winners tracing to Caller Ou are the Ascot Gold Vase winner Mackintosh (b c 1898 Florizel), the Cambridgeshire winner Gloriation (br c 1884 Speculum), the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini winner Dijital (ch f 1911 Calepino), the Gran Premio Derby Paulista winner Zecorredor (b c 1992 Minstrel Glory) and the South African Derby and Two Thousand Guineas winner Potomac (b c 1982 Liloy).

Following I'Anson's death in 1881 she was sold to Mr D Milner. Caller Ou died in 1884 at the age of twenty-six.
