Shotover
ch f 1879 (Hermit - Stray Shot, by Toxophilite). Sire Line
Camel.
Family 13-c.
Bred by Henry
Chaplin (later Lord Chaplin), Shotover was sold as a yearling to Hugh Lupus Grosvenor (1825-1899) the 1st Duke of Westminster. Her dam, Stray Shot (b f 1872 Toxophilite),
won seven races herself was a full sister to the smart filly Bel Phoebe (b f 1874), winner of the One Thousand Guineas Stakes, the Coronation Stakes, Liverpool Autumn Cup and the Manchester November Handicap. Stray Shot, bred by Sir Joseph Hawley, also produced Penitent (ch f 1884 Hermit), winner of the Ascot Stakes, the Alexandra Plate and the Hardwicke Stakes as well
as runner-up in the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes, the
Derby Stakes and the St. Leger Stakes, and later,
the dam of Ravensbury (b c 1890 Isonomy).
Shotover's two
year old season was unremarkable. At three, however,
she grew into her frame and came into form, winning
the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes from Quicklime (b c
1879 Wenlock) and Marden (b c 1879 Hermit),
the Derby Stakes from Quicklime and Bruce (b c 1879
See Saw), the Ascot Derby (now called the King Edward VII Stakes)
and the
Park Hill Stakes. She was also runner-up in the One
Thousand Guineas Stakes to St. Marguerite (ch f 1879 Hermit),
the St. Leger Stakes to Dutch Oven (br c 1879 Dutch
Skater) and the Select Stakes. Having lost her form
at four she was retired from the turf.
In the stud
she produced the Champion Stakes winner Orion
although it was her fillies who made the greater
contribution. Sent to America, Isis was the
ancestress of numerous good winners including Devil
Diver (b c 1939 St. Germans), and some equally good
winners in Argentina and Brazil trace to Simoon.
Ornis achieved the distinction of becoming the
eighth dam of the leading sire Mr. Prospector (b c
1970 Raise a Native) and the ninth dam of the triple
crown winner and leading sire Seattle Slew (bbr c
1974 Bold Reasoning). Shotover was destroyed
in 1898.
