Spanking Roger ch c 1732 (Childers - Sparkler, by Cyprus Arabian - Mare, by Spanker). Sire Line Darley Arabian.

First called Whitefoot, he was bred by William Capell (1697-1743), 3rd Earl of Essex, and owned successively by Sir Edmund Bacon for whom he ran in 1737 and 1738, Mr Grisewood and Viscount Weymouth. His dam, Lord Byron's Sparkler [ex-Maidenhead] also produced Mr Greville's Grantham (b c 1741 Hip). He had a satisfactory turf career, defeating, among others, Cupid (b c 1736 Somerset Arabian), a son of the illustrious mare, Bald Charlotte (ch f 1721 Old Royal). He died in 1741 after running a trial. His death was recorded at the bottom of an engraving.

1737 Won 20gs at Bungay, Sussex, beating Mr Maskills' Squirrel and 3 others, although the plate was subsequently awarded to Squirrel, Spanking Roger's jockey apparently having steered him the wrong side of a post. Won £20 at Epsom beating 3 others.
   
1738 Won £30 at Norwich, beating Sir Humphrey Howorth's Whitefoot (br c Hutton's Bay Barb) and 2 others. Won £40 at Stamford whilst distancing Mr Jackson's Basto (b c Hampton Court Childers). Won 40gs at Chesterfield, beating Mr Green's Countrywench (ch f 1732 Almanzor), Mr Wynn's Spanker, Sir James Pennyman's Rainbow (gr c 1732 Bloody Buttocks) and one other. Won £40 at York distancing 3 others. Won the Ladies' Purse of £90 at Lincoln, beating Sir Michael Newton's Spot (b c Bethell's Arabian).
   
1739 Running for Mr Grisewood, won the King's Plate at Newmarket, beating at 3 heats Mr Hutton's Black Chance (bl c 1732 Hutton's Bay Barb), Lord Weymouth's Scrutineer (br c 1732 Aleppo), Mr Williams's Marmot (br c Son of Bay Bolton) and the Duke of Devonshire's Second (b c 1732 Childers). Now running for Lord Viscount Weymouth, won the £50 Free Plate at Wells, Somersetshire, beating Mr Oxenden's Madam Violante (br f Oxford's Arabian). Won the 30gs at Denbigh, Wales, beating Mr Williams's Young Squirrel. Finished 2nd for a 40gs plate, won by Mr Panton's Cato (b c 1731 Partner), beating Lord Portmore's Squirt (ch c 1732 Bartlet's Childers). Started for a 30gs plate at Lichfield but was distanced after throwing his rider. Won the 50gs Free Plate at Bridgenorth, beating Mr Craven's Cupid (bl c 1736 Somerset Bay Arabian) and Mr Wynn's Looby (br c Bay Bolton). Won £40 at Winchester, beating Mr Bee's Looby (br c 1728 Bay Bolton).
