ST SIMON

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ORIGIN OF HIS SIRE LINE

An article in Current biology: CB - June 2017, entitled 'Y Chromosome Uncovers the Recent Oriental Origin of Modern Stallions' by Barbara Wallner et al, says - "We initially reconstructed the paternal genealogy of descendants of three English Thoroughbrd founders, Darley Arabian (1700), Byerley Turk (1680), and Godolphin Arabian (1724). Our samples included 110 descendants of Darley Arabian, 22 of Byerley Turk, and seven of Godolphin Arabian". "Out of the five pedigree errors observed in the descendants of Darley Arabian, one occurred in the lineage of King Fergus (1775)".

The 10 horses tested from the line of King Fergus were descendants of the stallions Persimmon and St Frusquin. Five horses were from one line of Persimmon, one horse was from another line of Persimmon and four horses were from the line of St Frusquin.

All 10 horses were shown to have the same yDNA expected for descendants of Byerley's Turk, rather than that expected for descendants of Darley's Arabian.

Persimmon and St Frusquin were sons of St Simon who, it would seem, also had the same yDNA expected for descendants of Byerley's Turk. It seems unlikely that separate errors occurred in the three lines tested.

The following are accounts of the conformation of the sires in the male line of St Simon back to Whitelock:

St Simon by Galopin

"A beautifully balanced brown horse with a tremendous shoulder, a short back, clean legs and strong, well-rounded quarters. He was about three inches taller than he was long. His only physical flaw was being over at the knee".

"His shoulder was a study. So obliquely was it placed that it appeared to extend far into his back, making the latter look shorter - and as a matter of fact it was shorter".

"Trainer Matt Dawson described him as having a certain electricity common to the Galopins".

Galopin by Vedette

"A short blocky horse of power and quality".

"Galopin and all the Galopins had Vedette-shaped hocks, and there was a peculiarity about them".

Vedette by Voltigeur

"A common yearling, having a large head with his hocks set back".

"Nothing could have been more unpromising than his yearling look, as his head was big, his middle like a brood mare's, and his hocks very far behind him, and hence, much as Lord Zetland liked the blood, he wavered for some time, till Mr. Williamson used all his eloquence in favour of 'the ugly one' ".

"By no stretch of imagination can it be conceived that Vedette in any way redeems the great house of Blacklock from its reproach of ugliness and deficiency in quality. He takes very much after the defunct Voltigeur both in shape and colour, but his head is even coarser , and he carries his tail in much the same 'slinking' fashion like a well threshed ear. He has the same inordinate length of cannon bone and from the point of the hock to the ground which made his sire look leggy ; while the shoulders, back, and couplings of both leave much to be desired, though the slackness of loin is not so conspicuous in Vedette as in Voltigeur. The legs of Vedette, however, are clean and good, and his finest quality, when in training, was his action, which, as John Scott said of Velocipede's, was 'perfection' ".

Voltigeur by Voltaire

"Did not bring a bid when put up for sale as a yearling, due, perhaps, to a heavy thick neck and thick body".

"Muscular and powerful but having a rather coarse head and being rather high on the leg".

"Fine sloping shoulders with a good depth of girth, powerful quarters, good knees and hocks with plenty of bone, although he was thought a trifle coarse through the head and neck".

Voltaire by Blacklock

"He was a big horse, and his head was more refined than that of his sire's and most of other of Blacklock's offspring".

"He had a remarkably fine barrel, and a ringbone on the off fore-foot; and some of his carriage-horses were as good and lofty as they could be for their purpose".

Blacklock by Whitelock

"Mr. Moss wanted Mr. Reed to buy Blacklock, but he 'dare not venture on his fore legs,' as his fetlocks and pasterns almost formed a straight line. He was a great black-brown, with a stride which required half-a-mile to settle itself in, a head like a half moon, with eyes quite in his cheeks, and quarters and shoulders as fine as horse could wear. Perhaps to the eye he might be rather light in the fore ribs, though the tape told a different tale, and the hocks of his stock generally stood well away from them, a formation which requires great strength in the loin to support. The hunting field was quite as much their sphere as the race-course".

"Like his sire, he had a great ugly head with convex profile".

"Of great size, and, barring his fiddle head, possessing splendid symmetry with fine action".

"To Blacklock, the other illustrious descendant of King Fergus, the British turf is almost as much indebted as to Orville, and happily he continues to be now well preserved in the male line. No pedigree in the 'Stud Book' better exemplifies the necessity of 'selection' in order to breed a first-class racehorse, which Blacklock undoubtedly was, irrespective of his immense fiddle-head, which was so ugly that, even in horse-loving Yorkshire, he was known as the 'Bishop Burton monstrosity' ".

The Blacklocks

"No blood in the stud-book is better-winded or runs better when full of flesh, which shows that the internal conformation is good, and ought to be perpetuated. Their aptitude for a distance displays itself in a muscular neck, without which few horses ever yet stayed; and they have also great depth from the withers to the shoulder-points, and an imense roundness of rib in making the curve from the spine. Voltigeur and Fandango have all these fine characteristics".

Whitelock oo Rosalind by Phoenomenon

"Whitelock was a naggish sort of horse with a big coarse head and plump forelegs".
[Plump (Middle Dutch, plomp, bulky) - (esp. of a person or animal or part of the body) having a full rounded shape; fleshy; filled out].

"The Druid tells us that he was 'a naggish sort of horse with a big coarse head and 'plump' forelegs".

"Blacklock's dam, the chesnut Rosalind by Coriander, was originally one of the Wiganthorpe stud in Atalanta and Faith's day. Mr. Garforth also bred his sire Whitelock 'a naggish horse with a big, coarse head and plumb forelegs".

(The Druid, Henry Hall Dixon, has here confused the unnamed bay mare by Coriander, dam of Blacklock, with the chesnut mare Rosalind by Phoenomenon, dam of Whitelock. He also says Whitelock's forelegs were 'plumb' but I think this is a mistake for 'plump'. 'Straight forelegs' is regarded as perfect conformation for a horse, so would not have been mentioned; whereas 'back at the knee' and 'over at the knee', both regarded as faults, would have been mentioned).

The mare Rosalind was a descendant, through Phoenomenon, of the stallion Sampson. He was a descendant of Darcy's cart horse stallion.

See THE HALF-CROWN CART-HORSE for further information.

The line from St Simon back to Whitelock appears uncontaminated, but before we investigate the paternity of Whitelock we must deal with the rumour, rife at the time, that Galopin was sired by Delight, a son of Ellington by The Flying Dutchman, a descendant of Byerley's Turk.

The New Book of the Horse, by Charles Richardson, volume 1, 1911, page 153, indicates that as early as 1875, when he was a three year old, it was "very freely alleged that Galopin was by Delight, and not by Vedette".

Names in Pedigrees, by Joseph Hill Palmer, published by The Blood-horse in 1939, page 94, says - "Since breeding operations at Diss were conducted by taking the sires around through crowded paddocks, it was inevitable that mistakes occurred, and there were some who insisted that Delight, not Vedette, was the sire of Galopin".

The following is taken from The Sporting Life, Friday, June 27, 1890:

"THE BREEDING OF GALOPIN

We have been favoured with an advanced proof of the following letter on this important and interesting subject addressed to the St. Stephen's Review :-

Baumber Park, June 14, 1890.

Dear Blinkhoolie, - You are quite right in your surmise that it is all moonshine as to Delight being the sire of Galopin. I bought Delight the year before I bought Flying Duchess in foal to Vedette ; and during the interesting and profitable occupation of manufacturing Galopin, Delight was never within sixty miles of Flying Duchess. It is a great pity, I think, that in this racing world of ours there are so many who believe in nothing, enjoy nothing, revel in nothing that is not either mysterious, improbable, or dishonest. They did not know Delight so well as I did or they would certainly have never credited him with the ability to sire so good a horse and father of a line of kings to be as Galopin was and is. I had Delight and Suffolk as sires at the same time, and the young Delights could make rings round the young Suffolks, and I recommended all my friends to buy the Delights, to the great loss of their money and my reputation, for every Suffolk won a race of some sort, but not one Delight ever won a race of any description. They could go like lightning for three furlongs, but no farther. Mr. Thomas Jennings was the only one I ever heard of who bred a winner by him, and she was a little chesnut filly selling plater. As a fact, more of his stock were chesnuts than any other colour. Who ever heard of St. Simon, Galopin, Vedette, or Voltigeur siring a chesnut? They must be very rare occurrences, I never heard of one. What is there to wonder at that Voltigeur's best son, and one of The Flying Dutchman's finest daughters should produce a good horse? Vedette, in my opinion, would have been one of the most successful sires of his time, had his harem and his produce received that attention which is absolutely neccessary to produce racehorses. Flying Duchess was badly colicked four times during the winter preceding the birth of Galopin, and during one of these attacks I quite thought she would have died, but happily she recovered and was no worse ; she had been used to poor food, and could not stand much, and I had to be very careful with her, and had she not fallen into some such hands as mine, Galopin would never have existed, or if he had, instead of living in clover (or rather on clover) at Blankney, would have been now drawing a shrimp net at some Norfolk watering place. If people only thought as I do, they would come to the conclusion that my share in the result of a most valuable line of sires, to say nothing of the dams being preserved to this country, was worthy of recognition in the shape of a leather medal. - What say you? - Yours truly, W. Taylor Sharpe".

The Sportsman, Saturday, March 18,1871, page 2, Stallions, says - "At Baumber Park, near Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Suffolk, by North Lincoln out of Protection, by Defence out of Testatrix, by Touchstone; a few mares at 10 guineas. Delight, by Ellington out of Placid; a few mares at 10 guineas. His stock, now yearlings, are very promising. Apply to Mr Sharpe, as above".

The Sporting Times, Saturday, April 01, 1871, page 4, Stallions For the Season 1871, says - "At Baumler [sic] Park, near Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Suffolk, by North Lincoln, out of Protection, by Defence, out of Testatrix, by Touchstone, a few Mares at Ten Guineas. - Subscription full. Delight, by Ellington, out of Placid, a few Mares at Ten Guineas. His stock, now yearlings, are very promising. Apply to Mr. Sharpe, as above".

The Lincoln, Rutland, and Stamford Mercury, Friday, May 12, 1871, page 7, Horse Notices, says - "To Serve Mares this Season, at Baumber Park, near Horncastle, Delight, by Ellington out of Placid. As a three-year-old he won the City and Suburban Handicap in a canter, he was favourite for the Derby, and was winning the Chester Cup when he broke down. He never ran afterwards. His Stock, now yearlings and foals, are very promising. Thorough-bred Mares at 10 Guineas each ; a few approved Half-breds at Half price. Suffolk, at 10 Guineas. The subscription to this Horse is full. Apply to Mr. Sharpe, as above".

Stallions were advertised either as standing at a stud farm or travelling from town to town on set dates. Breeders wishing to pay for a stallion's service would either take their mare to the stud farm or to the town on the date that the stallion was due to cover. Delight was serving mares at Baumber Park in 1871 and Flying Duchess was covered by Vedette at Diss in 1871.

Galopin was foaled on March 15, 1872 and according to the above advertisements Delight was definitely standing at stud at Baumber Park in 1871 from March 18 to May 12. I find it very hard to believe that William Taylor Sharpe would arrange for Delight to travel the sixty miles to Diss to cover a mare in April.

The Touchstone mare Delilah produced a colt by Vedette at Diss in 1871. She was later purchased by William Day at a sale at Diss in 1871, in foal to Delight, and produced a colt by Delight in 1872. This has been cited as evidence that Delight was at Diss and that he covered Flying Duchess there in early 1871.

I am certain that what actually happened was this: Delilah produced a colt by Vedette at Diss in 1871. She was then taken to Baumber Park to be covered by Delight and then returned to Diss, where she was later sold in foal to Delight. Flying Duchess was covered by Vedette at Diss in 1871, where she was later sold to William Taylor Sharpe in foal to Vedette and taken to Baumber Park.

The Sporting Life, Wednesday, December 16, 1891, page 4, says - "Galopin, by Vedette, son of Voltigeur, out of Flying Duchess, by The Flying Dutchman, and the very doubt that was passed upon Galopin came back to The Flying Dutchman, as those who pretended to know a great deal were prepared to prove that Galopin was by Delight, a son of Ellington, son of the Flying Dutchman. Rivalry for ever seemed to rest between the two horses long after both had retired to stud life, but I have always felt sure that the Delight story was a fabrication, as Galopin and all the Galopins had Vedette-shaped hocks, and there was a peculiarity about them".

The Sportsman, Saturday, April 13, 1901, page 5, says - "The 'Anserous One,' in his anxiety to prove someone else in the wrong as to the, of course, well-known death of the late Prince Batthyany, owner of Galopin, blunders badly himself when he says that Galopin was sold as a yearling at Newmarket for 600 guineas. He was sold at Middle Park, and the price was certainly not so much as 600 guineas. It was, I think, 520 guineas, and then, too, he mentions the old cock-and-bull story of Galopin possibly being by another horse than Vedette. This has long since been shown to be absurd, for Delight, the horse to whom this rumour assigns him, was not at the Diss Stud at all when Galopin was sired, having been bought by Mr Taylor Sharpe, and anyone who turns to the foal returns of 1871 will see that all the Delight foals of that year were bred by Mr Sharpe. It was in 1871 that Flying Duchess, having been mated with Vedette, was bought by Mr Taylor Sharpe, and in 1872 she produced Galopin at the Baumber Stud. I suppose the confusion of ideas arose from the fact of Delight also being at Baumber, but the mare did not come there till the end of the previous breeding season. I have explained this many times, but the old canard has a way of cropping up again".

The Sportsman, Wednesday, March 25, 1903, page 8, says - "Apropos, I hardly understand the meaning of Mr Graham's letter about Galopin and other subjects the other day, for Mr Taylor Sharpe has long since dissipated the fiction about Galopin being by any other horse than Vedette, Delight, in particular, not being at the Diss Stud at all the year Galopin was sired. Mr Graham seems to suggest that because Galopin's older brothers gained no distinction he cannot have been by the same sire. This would be a most unsafe inference in any case. Ormonde had several very moderate brothers, and surely Mr Graham would not contend, on that account, that Ormonde cannot have been by Bend Or. In the case of Galopin, however, even such slender basis of reason as there might be in such an argument wholly disappears when we recall the fact that his brothers were reared at the Diss Stud, and, had a similar fate befallen him, he, too, would probably have been equally unknown in Turf history ; but in Galopin's case, Mr Taylor Sharpe bought Flying Duchess when carrying him, and fed her well from that time forth at Baumber. So unaccustomed was she to a sufficiency of good food that her digestion was throughout that winter a source of considerable anxiety to those in charge of her, but she gradually picked up and in due time produced Galopin, who had this further advantage - that his dam had been barren the last year or two and had no foal at foot while she was carrying him. Mr Graham tells us how there was some confusion over a mare called Amaranth, which he and his late brother had purchased presumably at the Diss Sale, and which Mr Taylor Sharpe also thought he had secured. What is the exact point of this story I do not know, unless to show that the affairs at the Diss Stud were much mixed up".

Voltigeur's bone

Voltigeur, the sire of Vedette, was shot on 21 February 1874 and buried in the grounds of Aske Hall, Richmond, Yorkshire. His cannon-bone was preserved and is displayed in a glass cabinet in the Racing Museum at York Racecourse. If this bone is tested and found to have the same yDNA expected for descendants of Byerley's Turk, then I think we can safely dispense with the allegation that Delight was the sire of Galopin.

Rosalind

From 1800 to 1803 and 1805 to 1808 Rosalind had foals by Delpini, Hambletonian and Traveller. Traveller by Highflyer sired her foal of 1802. Delpini by Highflyer sired her foals of 1800, 1801 and 1807. Hambletonian sired her foals of 1803, 1805, 1806 and 1808. If we accept that the line is correct back to Whitelock, then it is possible that Rosalind was also covered in 1802 by Traveller or Delpini, both male line descendants of Byerley's Turk. Delpini was by far the better sire of the two and was arguably a better sire than Hambletonian. He was a grey but only passed this to half his get. Whitelock was so named because he had white hairs in his tail, but he remained bay so never inherited a grey gene. I have not been able to ascertain from whom he inherited the white tail hairs.

I think it is possible that Whitelock was by Hambletonian or Delpini. It is also possible that he was by Delpini or Hambletonian, but only Hambletonian was recorded as his sire. The first named stallion in a double cover is not usually the sire of the foal but it has been known.

Whitelock was bred by Mr Garforth. It is interesting to note that in 1808 Mr Garforth's grey mare Marcia, 1797 by Coriander out of Faith by Pacolet, bred the grey colt Pomfret Cake by Hambletonian or Delpini.
