The Mule |
| Entries in the
American Stud Book for this tail female line consistently
end in "imported Spanish Mare". Of the known 18th century
imported Spanish mares, only The Mule* is possible by dates as
the taproot mare of this family. She was not entered in the AmSB
except in the context of Telemachus' 4th dam. Fairfax Harrison
[E1:237] draws on an 1810 stud bill to estimate her date of
importation as 1770c, and refers to George B. Whiting's comments
(ATR2:255, re. his horse Lonsdale) in identifying her owner,
Col. Robert Alexander, as one of the Alexanders of southside
(Mecklenburg) Virginia. Harrison further notes the lack of
evidence as to whether The Mule* came from Spain or the West
Indies, but concludes from remarks in the stud bill that she was
"...of pure Andalusian blood and not, like so many Southside
mares of her time, a 'chickasaw'." |

|
Hadley's Arab |
| Hadley's Arab has not
been identified. |
| . |
|
Pacolet Mare |
| The earliest mare in this
line to have her own entry in the AmSB was the Pacolet Mare,
bred and owned by Jesse Cage of Tennessee. |
| . |
|
Stockholder Mare |
| The Stockholder Mare's
year foaled is given as 1833 [AmSB2:333], and is almost
certainly inaccurate since she foaled The Poney, whose age can
be confirmed from racing records, in 1834. |
