Bred by the 3rd Duke of Grafton, she was never trained. Prudence was a sister to sweepstakes winner Pledge (b f 1807 Waxy), the dam of the Derby winner Tiresias (br c 1816 Soothsayer); to King's Plates winner Pope Joan (b f 1809 Waxy), dam of One Thousand Guineas winner Tontine (ch f 1822 Election), Oaks winner Turquoise (br f 1825 Selim) and Two Thousand Guineas winner Turcoman (br c 1824 Selim); and to Derby winner Waxy Pope (b c 1806 Waxy). She was also half sister to the great Penelope (b f 1798 Trumpator), a King's Plate winner herself and dam of Derby winner Whalebone (br c 1807 Waxy) as well as taproot mare of Family 1-o; and half to King's Plates winner Parasol (b f 1800 Pot8os).

A great success in the stud, she was the dam of the Two Thousand Guineas winner Reginald (b c 1818 Haphazard) and the One Thousand Guineas winner Rowena (ch f 1817 Haphazard), who also placed 2nd in the Oaks. Her daughter Rebecca (b f 1821 Soothsayer) and her son Rufus (ch c 1822 Election) both won the Riddlesworth Stakes.
