Killy-Cranky

Killy-Cranky bl g 1730c. Galloway.

Over a span of four years the Galloway Killy-Cranky won seventeen of twenty-five starts and finished second five times. One of his races was for a 100 guineas match at Newmarket which he won whilst defeating the Pig Driver`s Mare. He appears to have stood less than 14 hands tall. There is no record of his pedigree.

Like many of his ilk he changed hands over the years and as the circumstances dictated his name was changed as well. In 1736 and 1737 Killy-Cranky ran for Mr Harwood, and possibly for Mr Mackworth. In 1738 he ran for Philip Ryley, possibly also under the names of Black Jack, Gypsy Jack and Fearnot. In 1739 Killy-Cranky ran for Mr Maskill, the latter perhaps more famous as the owner of Bumper (ch c 1735 Partner). Despite his general anonymity today Killy-Cranky was probably quite famous in his own time.
