Penelope b f 1798 (Trumpator - Prunella, by Highflyer). Sire Line Matchem. Family 1-o.

One of the most important mares in the history of the stud book, she was bred at Euston Hall in Suffolk, near Thetford on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, by Augustus Henry Fitzroy (1735-1811), the 3rd Duke of Grafton. She was a half sister to the Derby winner Waxy Pope (b c 1806 Waxy), and to the Oaks winner Pelisse (br f 1801 Whiskey).

Although she didn't run for any classics she did win most of her races during a five year turf career defeating Sir Charles Bunbury's Derby and Oaks winner Eleanor (b f 1798 Whiskey) on two occasions. Her most notable wins were a Jockey Club Plate, two King's Plates and two editions of the Oatlands Stakes.

In the stud she bred 13 foals, most of them to Waxy. Among her offspring were the two excellent stallions Whalebone (br c 1807 Waxy) and Whisker (b c 1812 Waxy), and the One Thousand Guineas Stakes winner Whizgig (ch f 1819 Rubens). Penelope heads her own branch, Family 1-o, of Family 1, descending from Tregonwell's Natural Barb Mare. She died in 1824.

In 1801 she won 250gs at Newmarket First Spring, beating Mr R Watt's Pacificator (br c 1798 Trumpator) and Lord Grosvenor's filly (ch f 1798 Buzzard). Won £50 At Newmarket Second Spring, beating Mr Bullock's Brother to Spear (b c 1798 Javelin), Mr R Heathcote's Paulo (b c 1798 Woodpecker) and 8 others. Won the King's Plate at Ipswich, beating Mr Golding's Lampedo (b f 1798 Pot8os) and Sir C Bunbury's Thais (br f 1798 Trumpator). Won £50 at the same place, beating Thais and Ostrich (ch c Seagull). Won £50 at Newmarket First October, beating Sir Frank Standish's filly (b f Sir Peter Teazle) and 4 others. Won the 200gs Oatlands Stakes at Newmarket Second October, beating the Hon George Watson's Striver (b c 1798 Delpini), Mr Howorth's Chippenham (b c 1796 Trumpator), Mr Whaley's Vivaldi (b c 1796 Woodpecker) and 3 others.

In 1802 collected a 20gs compromise at Newmarket Second Spring and won 45gs. Finished 2nd in a 100gs handicap at Newmarket First October, won by Mr Ladbroke's Marianne (ch f 1798 Mufti), beating Mr Watson's Gaoler (b c 1798 Volunteer). Finished 2nd in a £166 7s subscription at the same meeting, won by Sir C Bunbury's Derby and Oaks winner Eleanor (b f 1798 Whiskey), beating Sir F Standish's Sister to Gouty (br f Sir Peter Teazle). Ran twice more this year with no success.

In 1803 won a 200gs match at Newmarket Craven from Sir Frank Standish's Duxbury (b c Sir Peter Teazle). Finished 2nd for a £50 purse at Newmarket July, won by Lord Clermont's Rumbo (b c Whiskey), beating 2 others. Won 120gs at Newmarket First October, beating Mr Wilson's Surprise (b c Buzzard), Lignum Vitae (b c 1797 Walnut) and 2 others. Won £190 at Newmarket Second October, beating Eleanor and Mr Howorth's Malta (ch c 1798 Buzzard). Won a 200gs match at Newmarket Houghton from Lord Sackville's Whirligig (b c 1798 Whiskey). Ran twice more this year without success.

In 1804 won the 275gs Oatlands at Newmarket Craven, beating Chippenham, Mr Forth's Brighton (ch c Volunteer) and 3 others. Collected 60gs at Newmarket First Spring from Colonel Mellish's Eagle (b c 1796 Volunteer). Won the King's Plate at the same meeting beating Eleanor. Won £50 at the same meeting, beating Mr Dawson's Quiz (ch c 1798 Buzzard) and Lord Grosvenor's Montalto (b c John Bull). Won the Jockey Club Plate at Newmarket Second Spring, beating Lord Sackville's Dick Andrews (b c 1797 Joe Andrews). Lost a 100gs match at Newmarket First October to Mr F Neale's Bobtail (ch c 1795 Precipitate). Finished 2nd in a 120gs subscription at the same meeting, won by Mr Norton's Sir Harry Dimsdale (gr c 1800 Sir Peter Teazle), beating Eleanor. Won a 100gs match at Newmarket Houghton from Bobtail.

In 1805 lost a 200gs match at Newmarket Craven to Sir Hedworth Williamson's Walton (b c 1799 Sir Peter Teazle). This was her final race.
