Gohanna b c 1790 (Mercury - Sister to Challenger, by King Herod). Sire Line Eclipse. Family 24.

Gohanna was bred at Petworth in Sussex by George O'Brien Wyndham (1751-1837), 3rd Earl of Egremont, who also bred his full brother Precipitate (ch c 1787). The Druid described him as a "plain, powerful, hunter-like style of horse," and having been put to all types of mares, he got offspring "with great power, on short legs ; and, if they exceeded fifteen-one, it was beyond the average. His stock had broad foreheads, small noses, prominent eyes, and were generally very speedy and staying."

His remarkable racing career spanned eight years, the first two as Brother to Precipitate before being named Gohanna. His turf achievements would have more closely approached perfection had he not the misfortune to be of the same generation as Waxy (b c 1790 Pot8os). He retired to his Lordship's stud at Petworth, in Sussex, where his stud career was as distinguished as his turf career. His stud fee was initially 26gs but later rose to 52gs, and eventually declined to 21gs. He sired 151 winners of £45,608. His best son was probably the small and delicate Election (ch c 1804), a Derby winner and Champion sire in 1825. Gohanna died at Petworth in April of 1815.
