Bred in Bedfordshire by John FitzPatrick (1745-1818), 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory, County Cork, Ireland, who served as Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and had property at Ampthill Park, he raced from 1775 to 1780. During the course of his distinguished turf career he numbered such notable horses as Pot8os (ch c 1773 Eclipse) and Sweetwilliam (ch c 1768 Syphon) among his victims while his defeats came from the likes of Highflyer (b c 1774 Herod), King Fergus (ch c 1775 Eclipse and Pot8os (ch c 1773 Eclipse).

Dorimant retired to the Ampthill Park stud of Lord Ossory where he produced some good racehorses. His most notable offspring include (1) Grey Dorimant (gr f 1781), the dam of the famous racehorse Grey Diomed (gr c 1785 Diomed) who was later exported to Russia, (2) Gabriel* (b c 1790), an excellent racehorse and stallion, and later a useful sire in America, there producing, among others, Ogle's Oscar (b c 1800), and (3) the equally useful mare Sister to Strawberry* (b f 1787), whose descendants contributed to the stud books of England, Australia and America.

In 1775 he won a 100gs each sweepstakes at Newmarket in July, beating Mr Codrington's Clown (br c 1772 Syphon) and the Duke of Grafton's Priest (ch c 1772 Antinous). Won a 100gs each sweepstakes at Newmarket First October, beating Lord Grosvenor's Little Gim (ch c 1772 Gimcrack), Lord Abingdon's Grimalkin (ch c 1772 Eclipse), Mr H Vernon's Zerbino (b c 1772 Squirrel), Lord Clermont's Chequino (b c 1772 Herod), Lord Bolingbroke's King Pepin (gr c 1772 Turf) and 1 other.
 
In 1776 he won the 100gs each Great Sweepstakes at Newmarket in March, beating Sir J Shelley's Sarpedon (bl c 1772 Snap), Mr Brand's Glow-Worm (b c 1772 Eclipse), Mr Shafto's Dasher (br c 1772 Squirrel), Lord Clermont's Polydore (b c 1772 Squirrel), Sir L Dundas's Pontac (ch c 1772 Marske), Lord Farnham's Flaccus (b c 1772 Squirrel), Gen Parker's Undertaker (bl c 1772 Snap), Lord Clermont's Hunts'ton, Lord Farnham's Macheath (b c 1772 Squirrel) and 10 others. At the same meeting he won the 30gs each Fortescue Stakes at Newmarket in April, beating Mr Vernon's King Pepin, Grimalkin, Sir J Pennyman's Doge colt and Mr H Vernon's Zerbino. Won a 500gs match at Newmarket Second Spring from Lord Abingdon's Critic (b c 1771 Matchem). Won the 25gs each Grosvenor Stakes at Newmarket in July, beating Mr Harvey's Dasher, Mr Piggott's Rousseau (b c 1772 Chrysolite), Mr Vernon's Thetford (gr c 1772 Conundrum) and Gen Parker's Undertaker. Two days later at the same meeting he won the Eighty-Nine Guineas, beating Mr Piggott's Shark (br c 1771 Marske), Mr Vernon's Plunder (b c 1771 Herod), Mr Jennings's Count (br c 1772 Snap), the Duke of Grafton's Magnet (b c 1770 Herod), Sir C Bunbury's Hephestion (br c 1771 Marske), Lord Clermont's Masquerade (gr f 1771 Marske), Lord Grosvenor's grey Dux colt and Mr Walker's Aeneas. Won the 1400gs Renewal at Newmarket First October, beating Mr Jennings's Count. At the same meeting won a 20gs each subscription, beating Mr Vernon's Indian (br c 1771 Snap), Lord Abingdon's Zimmerman and Lord Farnham's Flaccus.
 
In 1777 he won a 300gs each sweepstakes at Newmarket in March, beating Sir L Dundas's Pontac and Lord Grosvenor's Sweetwilliam (ch c 1768 Syphon). At Newmarket First Spring he was paid 90gs to withdraw from the 140gs subscription, which was subsequently won by Lord Abingdon's chestnut Marske colt, with Mr O'Kelly's Horizon (gr c 1772 Eclipse) placing 2nd, Mr Vernon's Hussar (br c 1772 Snap) 3rd and Mr Brand's Paramount 4th. Finished 2nd for the 86gs Lord Craven's Plate at Newmarket Second Spring to Lord Clermont's Masquerade, beating Mr Jacob's Poll, Sir C Bunbury's Whirlwind (b c 1773 Bellario), Lord March's Slim (b c 1771 Squirrel), the Duke of Grafton's Skipjack, Lord Craven's Sleipner (b c 1773 Goldfinder), Mr Pratt's Monosyllable (b f 1773 Matchem) and 4 others. The next day at the same meeting won a 25gs each subscription, beating Mr Vernon's Warwick (b c 1773 Herod), Lord Grosvenor's Brother to Mopsqueezer (br c 1773 Matchem) and Lord Abingdon's Leviathan. Won a subscription purse at York in August, beating Mr Peregrine Wentworth's Fairplay (b c 1772 Omnium) and Sir L Dundas's Pontac. Finished 3rd for a subscription purse at the same meeting to Sir H Harpur's Pilot (gr c 1770 Dainty Davy), with Mr Pratt's Maiden (ch f 1770 Matchem) placing 2nd, beating Mr Wentworth's Ancaster (br c 1768 Blank). Walked over for the Cup at Newmarket First October. Won the 140gs at Newmarket Second October, beating Mr Pigott's Shark, Mr Vernon's Shoemaker, Lord Abingdon's Leviathan, the Duke of Grafton's Labyrinth (b c 1770 Squirrel) and Sir J Shelley's Sarpedon . The next day at the same meeting won a 10gs each subscription, beating Lord Clermont's Dictator (ch c 1773 Matchem), Lord Farnham's Prince (b c 1773 Herod), Sir C Davers's Woodpecker (ch c 1773 Herod), Lord Abingdon's Garrick (ch c 1772 Marske) and Mr Vernon's Warwick.
 
In 1778 lost a 200gs each stakes and the Whip at Newmarket Second Spring to Mr Pigott's Shark. Two days later at the same meeting won a 25gs each subscription, beating Mr Vernon's Pastorella (b f 1774 Otho), Lord Abingdon's Hurlothrumbo (b c 1773 Domitian), Lord Clermont's Il'mio (b c 1774 Herod) and 2 others. Running for Lord C Spencer, won the Cup at Oxford in July, beating Sir J Wheate's Pompey (br c 1774 Marske), Mr Whalley's Herod filly, Mr Fernyhough's Horse-catcher, Mr P Bertie's Stingo and Mr R Bertie's Pot8os (ch c 1773 Eclipse). Running for Lord Ossory, he finished 3rd for the 140gs at Newmarket First October, won by Mr Vernon's Pastorella, with Sir J Shelley's Comet (ch c 1774 Matchem) placing 2nd, beating Mr Pigott's Humbug (ch c 1773 Chrysolite) and Lord Clermont's Il'mio. In 1779 he won the Jockey Club Plate at Newmarket Second Spring, beating Mr Compton's Fleacatcher (b f 1773 Goldfinder), Lord Craven's Critic, the Duke of Grafton's Magnet and Mr Vernon's Prince. Two days later at the same meeting finished 2nd for a 200gs each sweepstakes to Mr Compton's Highflyer (b c 1774 Herod), beating Lord Clermont's Dictator.
 
In 1780 he finished 5th of 5 for a 200gs each sweepstakes at Newmarket First Spring, won by Sir C Davers's Woodpecker, with Mr Douglas's Bourdeaux (gr c 1774 Herod) 2nd, Lord Grosvenor's Pot8os 3rd and Lord Derby's Laburnum (b c 1774 Herod) 4th. Finished 3rd of 3 for the 140gs subscription at Newmarket Second Spring, won by Lord Grosvenor's Pot8os, with Major O'Kelly's King Fergus (ch c 1775 Eclipse) 2nd.
