Canterbury Pilgrim ch.f. 1893 (Tristan
- Pilgrimage, by The Palmer). Sire Line Camel.
Family 1-g.
Bred by Caroline, Duchess of
Montrose, Canterbury Pilgrim was described as smallish and possessed of
a wicked temper, nevertheless, she became one of the more influential
broodmares of the century. She probably came by her temper honestly, her
sire being the bad tempered but game and tough Tristan, who won
twenty-nine races over five years including the Ascot Gold Cup. Her dam,
Pilgrimage, was a very good filly who won six races including the One
and Two Thousand Guineas Stakes.
Canterbury Pilgrim was half-sister
to Jeddah (ch.c. 1895 Janissary) who won the Derby Stakes, Knight of
Malta (br.c. 1886 Galopin), Lourdes (br.f. 1884 Sefton), Loved One
(br.c. 1883 See Saw), Mecca (ch.f. 1891 Isonomy), Pilgrim's Progress
(ch.c. 1887 Isonomy) and Shrine (f. 1887 Isonomy).
Canterbury Pilgrim won four races
including the Oaks Stakes, Liverpool Summer Cup, Park Hill Stakes and
the Jockey Club Cup. In the stud she produced ten foals, seven of whom
were winners and of these, two became outstanding sires.
