Bred and owned by H. C. Hatch of Toronto, Ontario, he was a half-brother to the King's Plate winner Acara (gr.c. 1941). As a two year old Budpath placed 3rd in Mrs. Orpen's Cup and Saucer Handicap. At three he won the King's Plate, Canadian Derby, and the Hare Memorial Handicap. He was runner-up in the Polo Park Handicap and 3rd in the Orpen Memorial Handicap.
